About Zenwing Puppets

Zenwing Puppets is based
in Ross-shire, in the beautiful
Highlands of Scotland.
Chris, (actor/artist/ puppeteer)
and Karrie (writer/puppeteer) produce puppet shows and workshops.

We began touring in 2005 with the support of HI-Arts and Highlands & Islands Enterprise. Venues range from city theatres to village halls, rural barns and an arctic fish wagon. We enjoy meeting so many innovative communities and children. We also like to come home again!

Creativity is a shapechanger, and we experience the energising flow and collisions this brings into our lives. We build puppets that make us laugh; and puppets that turn hideous over night. We are not virtuoso performers, but we are passionate about puppetry. We aim to do our creative best for every audience or group we work with.

The name Zenwing came through a word play on ‘penguin’. The whistling penguin appeared in our first public show ‘Life’s a Mystery’.  He randomly moved back and forth across the stage. He wasn’t really anything to do with the story, but his happy presence seemed important in a Zen kind of way.

The Ross-shire State Puppet Circus family show was our first major touring production. Hi-Arts Producers Fund was our life-line. We thank all the audiences who adorned red noses and participated in the spirit of the show.

We’re often asked how we first became involved in puppetry. Maybe there is no beginning as such, but there are some points of reference for each of us. A surprise black cat glove-puppet on the pillow; the dress sculptures and a childhood puppet called Jacko.

Here’s a fun film ‘Rose and Walter’ by Ally Macleod of Irisaria Pictures 2009
We had such a beautiful day!
